Master’s Studies „Remote Sensing and GIS”

Master’s Studies „Remote sensing and GIS” include issues directly linked with remote sensing and geoinformatic tools. Specializing subjects include three areas: remote sensing, GIS understood as Geographical Information Science and programming.

On the area of remote sensing there are the following subjects: Photo Interpretation, Platforms and Sensors, Remote Sensing Image Processing, Hyperspectral Image Processing, Thermal and Microwave Remote Sensing, SAR Interferometry, Digital Terrain Model, ALS, TLS. Students will learn the rules of image recognition and become highly recommended specialists (see Image Recognition Centre - Ośrodek Rozpoznania Obrazowego https://oro.wp.mil.pl/pl/bip/praca/, cyber safety, monitoring of borders, related to illegal emigration etc.). The subject of remote sensing is automatic processing of remote sensing images with the application of various algorithms, including: atmospheric correction, machine training, feeding the existing database. During classes students will learn all the kinds of remote sensing data: optical images, thermal images, microwave images and radar images. A subject including hyperspectral image processing is particularly worth attention. Such images are one of new intensively developed remote sensing technologies. Due to the fact that processing this type of data significantly differs from the processing of other remote sensing data, the graduates of this specialization will extend their abilities in this area. Another subject worth attention is processing the radar data. The graduates will get knowledge and abilities connected with the application of interferometric technology applied to subsidence measurements, which is also studied in other specializations. Moreover, the students will gain knowledge on wider use of radar images, e.g., in classification of images in the monitoring of floods, soil humidity, or land cover /land use.

The classes of: Digital Terrain Model, ALS, TLS refer to obtaining laser data from airborne, terrestrial and mobile ceiling for the needs of making digital terrain models and terrain surface, including 3/4D modelling between other buildings (there is also a demand for this).

The second group of subjects are classes in GIScience: Geospatial Analysis, Foundation Geographical Information Science (GIScience), Advanced Raster Analysis, Geographical Information Science (GIScience), GIS for Decision Support System (DSS). Apart from the subject referring to the study area: Geospatial Analysis are proposed to extend knowledge and skills in GIS, referring to: connecting GIS technology with practical use, taking into account various factors, other than technical: knowledge-based conditions, sociological conditions, negotiations with stakeholders, compromise and risk analyses, etc.

The third group includes programming techniques: PYTHON and MATLAB Programming, Python, Matlab for Geoscience, WebGIS. The purpose of the classes is not a training to make a professional programmer, but providing the graduate programming tools to solve problems related to processing remote sensing data, their integration in GIS and the automatics of spatial analyses.

The students learn contemporary remote sensing technologies of getting data from all the ceilings: satellite, airborne, drones and terrestrial platforms (so-called close range remote sensing). They learn how to use records in various spectral ranges: visible light, near infrared, short infrared, thermal radiation, microwave radiation, radar techniques and lidar techniques. Both commercial and public domain images used in various areas of economy will be analysed. Due to the co-operation with photo-aviation companies, the students will practically know the process of obtaining airborne data and will be able to obtain data from cameras, terrestrial scanners and drones without any assistance.

Study-area-related subjects and general subjects common to other specializations in this study area include: Principles of Cartography and GIS Databases, Modelling of Environmental Processes, Mobile Applications Programming, Information Security and Reporting Results of Scientific Research.

In the framework of the specialization, the students will learn the methods of preparing and processing remote sensing data in the widest possible range using commercial software, open-source software and techniques of high-level programming (an example of a job offer: http://progea.pl/oferty-pracy/specjalista-ds-gis-teledetekcji/).
